New Year's Eve in Bergen: Fireworks, Dinner and Where to Stay

New Year's Eve in Bergen centres on Vågen, the city harbour, where the municipality sets off a joint fireworks display at midnight. Have a New Year's dinner in the centre first, then walk back to your hotel afterwards. Here is our guide to New Year's Eve in Bergen without the taxi queue.

Fireworks over the harbour

The highlight of New Year's Eve in Bergen is the joint fireworks display over Vågen. It is launched over Vågen at midnight and can be seen from much of the city and the surrounding area.

Instead of everyone setting off their own rockets among old wooden houses, the city gathers around one display. It is safer, and it is more spectacular.

Where to watch the fireworks in Bergen

You can see the fireworks from all over the city centre, but some spots are better than others:

  • Bryggen: the UNESCO-listed wharf, right in front of the display with the old wooden buildings in the foreground. It gets crowded, so arrive early.

  • The Fish Market and the quays around Vågen: close, open and a short walk from the restaurants.

  • Mount Fløyen: a view over the whole city, with the fireworks below you. It is cold and dark at the top, and Fløibanen usually runs until midnight, so check the departures at floyen.no before you go up.

  • From your table: Some restaurants in the centre overlook the harbour. Bjerck has what we think is the best view in Bergen. [SJEKK: om Bjerck har åpent ved midnatt nyttårsaften 2026]

Dress for rain. A wet New Year's Eve is not unusual in Bergen, and you will be outdoors for a while.

Fireworks rules in Bergen

Bringing your own fireworks? Bergen has strict rules:

  • Private fireworks are only allowed on New Year's Eve, between 18:00 and 02:00.

  • They are banned in and near the dense wooden-house areas, including Bryggen, Nordnes, Skuteviken, Nøstet and Sydnes.

  • You must not set off fireworks if there is any risk of fire or injury.

The municipality publishes a map of the restricted areas. If you are staying in the centre, leave the rockets at home and enjoy the joint display.

New Year's Eve dinner in Bergen

A good New Year's Eve in Bergen starts at the table. Several of our restaurants in the city centre serve special New Year's menus, with early or late seatings so you can make it to the fireworks. Menus, seatings and booking are all collected on Bergen's it-place on New Year's Eve. [SJEKK: hvilke restauranter, menyer, priser og bordsettinger som gjelder for nyttårsaften 2026]

New Year's Eve tables are among the first to sell out all year. Book early, ideally in November.

Celebrating as a larger group? A private room could be the answer. See our private dining rooms at Chambre Séparée.

Before dinner: a New Year's Eve concert

Want to start the evening with music? The brass band Eikanger-Bjørsvik holds a New Year's Eve concert at Grieghallen at 16:00. That leaves plenty of time to change and make it to dinner. For more concerts in December, see our guide to Christmas concerts in Bergen.

Stay in the city centre

The best advice we can give for New Year's Eve in Bergen: stay in the centre. The taxi queue after midnight is long, and you do not want to stand in it in your best clothes and the rain.

De Bergenske has six hotels in central Bergen, all within walking distance of the harbour. Have dinner, watch the fireworks and be back in your room minutes later. [SJEKK: om hotellene tilbyr nyttårspakke med middag og overnatting 2026]

Getting home after midnight

If you are heading home after the fireworks, plan it before you go out:

  • Taxi: Queues after midnight are long, and it can take a while to get a car. Pre-book if you can.

  • Light rail and buses: check the New Year's night departures in the Skyss app or at skyss.no.

  • On foot: The centre is small, and most hotels are a few minutes' walk from the harbour.

The simplest solution is still a room within walking distance.

New Year's Day in Bergen

The city is quiet on 1 January. Many shops and restaurants are closed, and locals take it easy. [SJEKK: hvilke av De Bergenskes restauranter som har åpent 1. januar 2027]

It is a good day for fresh air. A walk up Mount Fløyen or along the city mountains is the local cure after a long night, and the view over Bergen is just as good in the January light. See our tips for the best hikes in Bergen.

A plan for the evening

How we would spend New Year's Eve in Bergen:

  • 16:00: New Year's Eve concert at Grieghallen, or a walk around town while it is still quiet.

  • 18:00: Check in, change and get ready.

  • Early evening: New Year's dinner in the city centre.

  • 23:30: Walk down to Vågen or Bryggen and find a spot.

  • 00:00: Joint fireworks over the harbour.

  • Afterwards: A drink at the bar, then a short walk back to your hotel.
