Winter break in Bergen 2027: things to do with the whole family

A Bergen winter break works best in late February or early March, when Norwegian schools take their winter holiday. Bergen schools are off 1 to 5 March 2027, Oslo the week before. Either way, skiing, the aquarium, museums and a waterpark are a short walk or ride from your hotel.

When is the Norwegian winter holiday in 2027?

Norway's winter holiday, called vinterferie, depends on where you live:

  • Bergen: week 9, Monday 1 March to Friday 5 March 2027.

  • Oslo: week 8, Monday 22 February to Friday 26 February 2027.

  • Elsewhere in western Norway: schools follow their own municipality, and some take week 8.

If you are travelling from abroad, it helps to know this. During these two weeks, many Norwegian families travel, so hotels and restaurants fill up faster. Week 8 is usually calmer in Bergen itself, because local children are still in school. In week 9 you share the city with local families, so book rooms and tables early.

Skiing straight from the city

Bergen is famous for rain, but the city mountains get snow most winters. When conditions allow, there are groomed cross-country trails on both Fløyen and Ulriken. The Fløibanen funicular takes you from the city centre to the top in about eight minutes, so you can ski in the morning and be back in town for dinner. If the trails are thin on snow, the sledging hill and the forest at the top are often enough to keep the kids happy.

For more reliable snow, several ski areas are within reach:

  • Totland: floodlit trails, about 15-20 minutes by car.

  • Gullbotn: floodlit trail and a warming hut, about 30 minutes by car.

  • Eikedalen: family-friendly downhill with a ski school, about 50 minutes.

  • Voss Resort: about an hour by train, with a gondola from the station.

  • Myrkdalen: about an hour and a half, known for deep snow.

Fløyen and Ulriken in winter

Even without skis, the city mountains are a full day out. Fløyen has the Troll Forest, a café and easy forest paths for small legs. Fløibanen runs every day all year, but is closed for maintenance from 15 to 18 February 2027.

Ulriken is the highest of Bergen's city mountains, and the Ulriken cable car takes you up to views of the whole city and the fjords. It works best for children over five who can manage a short walk at the top. The hike across Vidden between Fløyen and Ulriken is for experienced hikers, and in winter it needs proper gear and stable weather.

What to do on wet days

Some days in February and March, Bergen shows its most honest side, with sideways rain and wind off the sea. Have an indoor plan ready:

  • Bergen Aquarium at Nordnes: penguins, sea lions, otters and crocodiles, indoors and out.

  • VilVite: a hands-on science centre for curious kids.

  • AdO arena: a waterpark with a 68-metre slide and a pool for the youngest [SJEKK: discount for Heimen Hotel guests].

  • KODE: seven art museums, including one of the world's finest Munch collections.

The aquarium is the favourite, and we have a separate guide to the best family activities in Bergen. For more indoor ideas, read things to do in Bergen with kids.

The city itself

Much of the best of Bergen lies between your hotel and the fjord. Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Hanseatic Museum tells the story of the merchants who built the city. A few minutes away is Bergenhus Fortress, one of the best preserved in Norway, with Håkonshallen and the Rosenkrantz Tower.

The Fish Market is an easy stop between sights. For the brave, Nordnes Sjøbad has a heated outdoor saltwater pool all year, plus a sauna for the adults. Children under ten must be accompanied by an adult who can swim.

The big advantage is that all of this is within walking distance. You do not need a car in the city, and small children can rest at the hotel in the middle of the day. Take an evening stroll along the harbour when it gets dark. The lights of Bryggen reflected in the water are often what children remember best from a winter trip to Bergen.

Culture for when the kids want to be indoors

Bergen is a city of culture in February too. Troldhaugen, the home of composer Edvard Grieg by Lake Nordåsvannet, makes a good half-day trip for families with older children who play an instrument or like a good story. Bergen City Museum runs several sites around town, and Håkonshallen and the Rosenkrantz Tower sit together at Bergenhus.

In March, Bergen hosts Borealis, a five-day festival of experimental music and art. Borealis 2027 runs from 17 to 21 March, after the winter school holiday.

Check children's performances at the city's theatres and the cinema schedule before you travel. On days when the plan falls apart, a film is an easy rescue for big and small.

Where to stay with kids

Heimen Hotel is our most family-friendly hotel, a short walk from the aquarium, the Fish Market, Fløibanen and Bryggen.

Travelling as a larger group, or looking for something different? Choose between six unique hotels in Bergen city centre. Weeks 8 and 9 are busy, so book early.

Food for hungry skiers

After a day outdoors, nobody wants to wait long for dinner. Frescohallen at Bergen Børs Hotel is open from morning to evening every day, and kids get to eat beneath some of the city's most beautiful frescoes. Bjerck looks out over the harbour and Bryggen and serves fish and chips that suit most ages. Wesselstuen serves traditional Bergen food, a good introduction for children who like to try something new.

Children's menus vary between restaurants [SJEKK: kids' menu and prices at Frescohallen, Bjerck and Wesselstuen]. Book ahead during the holiday weeks, especially for dinner, through our table reservation page.

An evening for the grown-ups

When the kids fall asleep early after a day on the trails, the adults deserve something too. Grand Hotel Terminus serves afternoon tea, a calm break that may also suit older children with a sweet tooth [SJEKK: children's price and whether afternoon tea suits kids]. Amundsen Bar & Bistro has one of the city's largest whisky selections, and Skostredet Spa, which has an age limit of 18, is a good place for the grown-ups to warm up after a cold day in the mountains.

Travelling with grandparents or friends? Take turns having the evening off. The beauty of staying central is that nobody has to drive home.

What to pack for a Bergen winter

Bergen weather can switch from sunshine to sleet in a single morning. With the right clothes, it is still a great week:

  • Rain gear and waterproof shoes, for adults too.

  • Wool base layers, especially in the mountains.

  • Hat, mittens and a spare pair of socks in the backpack.

  • Shoes with good grip, as the city's steep streets can get icy.

  • Swimwear for AdO arena and the sea bath.

You do not need to bring everything. Eikedalen rents out equipment, and so do several other ski areas.

A five-day plan

Here is how a winter break week in Bergen could look:

  1. Monday: Arrive, check in and take an evening walk along Bryggen.

  2. Tuesday: Fløibanen up, skiing or the Troll Forest, hot chocolate at the top.

  3. Wednesday: The aquarium in the morning, VilVite or KODE after lunch.

  4. Thursday: Day trip to Voss or Eikedalen for downhill skiing.

  5. Friday: The Ulriken cable car if it is clear, otherwise AdO arena.

The plan is weatherproof. Swap the days around based on the forecast, and put the quietest day after the longest one. Only have a long weekend? Choose Fløyen, the aquarium and Bryggen. That gives the kids mountains, animals and city in three days.

Frequently asked questions

When is the winter break in Bergen in 2027?

Schools in Bergen have their winter break in week 9, from Monday 1 March to Friday 5 March 2027. Oslo schools are off the week before, 22 to 26 February. Visitors from abroad should expect busier hotels and attractions in both weeks, since many Norwegian families travel then. Book accommodation and restaurant tables early.

Does it snow in Bergen in February?

Snow in the city centre is never guaranteed, but the city mountains usually get snow most winters. When conditions are good, there are groomed trails on Fløyen and Ulriken. For more reliable snow, Eikedalen, Voss and Myrkdalen often have better conditions than the city. Check the Yr forecast and avalanche warnings on Varsom before heading out.

Can you go downhill skiing near Bergen?

Yes. Eikedalen is the closest, about 50 minutes by car, and is family-friendly with a ski school and rentals. Voss Resort is about an hour away and easy to reach by train from Bergen station, with a gondola right by the station. Myrkdalen is about an hour and a half away and is known for plenty of snow.

Do you need a car for a family trip to Bergen?

Not in the city. The aquarium, Bryggen, the Fish Market, Fløibanen and most museums are within walking distance of the central hotels. For skiing at Voss, the train from Bergen station is easy. A car is useful mainly for Eikedalen and Myrkdalen, and Heimen Hotel offers parking if you drive.

Where should families stay in Bergen?

Heimen Hotel is our most family-friendly hotel, with family rooms of 20-30 m², bunk beds in some rooms and cots on request. Breakfast is included, and the hotel is a short walk from the aquarium, Fløibanen and Bryggen. Staying centrally means you can walk to most things and let small children rest midday.

A winter break in Bergen gives you mountains, fjord and city in the same week, without spending half the day in a car. Book your room early, pack the skis and let the weather decide the order.
