Bergen in October 2027: autumn break ideas for the whole family

Bergen in October means autumn colours on the city mountains, a film festival, fjord trips and cosy evenings in the city centre. Bergen schools have their autumn break from 11 to 15 October 2027, and Oslo the week before. Here is everything your family needs to plan the week.

When is the Norwegian autumn break in 2027?

Norway's autumn break, called høstferie, falls in different weeks around the country:

  • Bergen: week 41, Monday 11 October to Friday 15 October 2027.

  • Oslo: week 40, Monday 4 October to Friday 8 October 2027.

If you are visiting from abroad, it is worth knowing this. Many Norwegian families travel during these two weeks, so hotels and restaurants fill up faster. Week 40 is usually calmer in Bergen itself, because local children are still in school. In week 41, you share the city with Bergen families, so book rooms and tables early.

Autumn colours on the city mountains

October is one of the best months for hiking in Bergen. Birch and rowan turn yellow and red, the air is clear between showers, and the trails are quieter than in summer.

  • Fløyen: the Fløibanen funicular takes you up in about eight minutes, with paths for all ages and the Troll Forest for little ones.

  • Rundemanen: a longer hike on from Fløyen, with views over the city and fjord.

  • Ulriken: the Ulriken cable car takes you to Bergen's highest city mountain, best for kids over five.

  • Vidden: the hike between Fløyen and Ulriken is for experienced hikers.

Days get shorter in October, so start early and bring a headlamp. Read our guide to Ulriken, Fløyen and the city mountains.

Film, music and culture in October

Autumn is festival season in Bergen. BIFF, the Bergen International Film Festival, shows more than 150 documentaries and feature films, mainly at Bergen Kino. Ekko is a festival of experimental and electronic music over several days, more for teens and adults than for small children.

In 2026 BIFF ran from 14 to 22 October and Ekko from 29 October to 1 November, so whether the festivals overlap with the 2027 school holiday depends on the dates. Either way, check the programme. Many festivals have screenings and events that suit older kids and teenagers.

A walk through 900 years

Bergen city centre is small enough to walk and big enough to fill several days. Start at Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and continue to the Hanseatic Museum for the story of the merchants who made the city rich.

A few minutes away is Bergenhus Fortress, one of the best preserved in Norway. Here you will find Håkonshallen and the Rosenkrantz Tower, both part of Bergen City Museum. Kids love the stairs and the view from the tower.

Finish at the Fish Market and watch the boats come in. The whole loop takes half a day at an easy pace, with plenty of time for breaks.

Indoor days with the kids

October in Bergen also means rain, so it helps to have a few indoor favourites ready:

  • Bergen Aquarium at Nordnes: penguins, sea lions and otters, indoors and out.

  • VilVite: a science centre where kids can try things themselves.

  • AdO arena: a waterpark with a 68-metre slide.

  • Bergen Technical Museum and the University Museum: trams, trains and animals from around the world.

We have gathered our best tips in things to do in Bergen with kids. Alternate between an indoor day and an outdoor day so everyone gets a bit of both.

Day trips from the city

With a full week, you have time to leave the city centre for a day:

  • Fjord trip: the Nærøyfjord and the Hardangerfjord can both be visited on a day trip from Bergen. See our guide to fjord tours from Bergen.

  • Apples and cider in Hardanger: September and October are peak season, and many farms welcome visitors and sell directly. Opening hours vary from farm to farm, so check before you go.

  • Bike ride: along the coast south towards Os or west towards Sotra. Bikes can be rented in the city centre.

Pick a day with a good forecast and put it in the middle of the week. That leaves a spare day if the weather turns.

Dark evenings, bright ideas

In October it gets dark early, and that is part of the charm. Take an evening walk along Bryggen when the lights reflect in the harbour, and look at the boats by the Fish Market. Streets in the centre are short and easy to walk, even with small children.

Evenings are made for board games in the hotel room, a film at the cinema or a long dinner. If grandparents are along, the adults can take turns having an evening off. Skostredet Spa is a great place for the adults to warm up after a day in the autumn wind (age limit 18), and Amundsen Bar & Bistro has one of the largest whisky selections in town.

A rainy afternoon with cake

Some October afternoons are made for staying in. Grand Hotel Terminus serves afternoon tea, with tea, small cakes and a calm that suits a wet morning [SJEKK: children's price and whether afternoon tea suits kids].

It is a good tradition to start on an autumn break: one afternoon when nobody has to do anything, and older kids get a taste of grand hotel atmosphere.

Only a long weekend?

No full week? Bergen works well in three days. Pick one mountain day on Fløyen, one indoor day with the aquarium and VilVite, and one day in the centre with Bryggen and Bergenhus. Fly or take the train in on Friday, head home on Sunday evening, and you will have seen the essentials.

Where to stay with kids

Heimen Hotel is our most family-friendly hotel, a short walk from the aquarium, the Fish Market, Fløibanen and Bryggen.

  • Family room: 20-30 m² with a double bed and sofa bed, for two adults and one or two children.

  • Bunk bed: in the Standard Moderate room, for families whose kids want their own room.

  • Breakfast: included, and cots are available on request.

  • Parking: the hotel's own spaces plus an agreement with KlosterGarasjen.

Prefer somewhere else? Choose from six unique hotels in Bergen city centre, all within walking distance of each other. Weeks 40 and 41 are popular, so book early.

Dinner after a day outdoors

After a long hike, a table waiting for you is a fine thing. Engen Steakhouse grills steak and seafood over charcoal. Fresquito serves Spanish tapas, a great way to let kids try lots of small dishes. Matbaren at Zander K cooks with local, organic ingredients.

Check ahead whether there is a kids' menu [SJEKK: kids' menu at Engen Steakhouse, Fresquito and Matbaren]. Book dinner during the holiday weeks through our table reservation page, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

A five-day plan

Here is how an autumn break week in Bergen could look:

  1. Monday: Arrive, check in and have dinner in the city centre.

  2. Tuesday: Fløibanen up, an autumn hike and hot chocolate in the Troll Forest.

  3. Wednesday: A day trip on the fjord or to Hardanger.

  4. Thursday: The aquarium in the morning, VilVite after lunch.

  5. Friday: Ulriken if it is clear, otherwise AdO arena and a film.

Swap the days around based on the forecast. Always have an indoor plan ready, and let the adults pick dinner at least one evening.

Frequently asked questions

When is the autumn break in Bergen in 2027?

Schools in Bergen have their autumn break in week 41, from Monday 11 October to Friday 15 October 2027. The dates come from the municipality's guideline school calendar, so some schools may add planning days before or after. Oslo schools are off the week before, which means many Norwegian families travel across both weeks.

October is festival month in Bergen. BIFF, the Bergen International Film Festival, screens more than 150 films, and Ekko brings experimental and electronic music. The city mountains are full of autumn colour, and it is peak apple and cider season in Hardanger. Festival dates change from year to year, so check the programme before you travel.

Is October too late for hiking in Bergen?

No, October is one of the best months on the city mountains, with autumn colours, fewer people and clear air between showers. Days are shorter, so start early and bring a headlamp. Fløyen suits all ages, while Ulriken is best for kids over five. The hike across Vidden should only be done by experienced hikers in good weather.

What is the weather like in Bergen in October?

Expect a mix of rain, wind and bright spells, often on the same day. Bergen is one of Europe's rainiest cities, and October is part of the wet season. What can teenagers do in Bergen during the autumn break?

Teens often enjoy the BIFF film festival and the Ekko music festival if the dates match the holiday. VilVite and the 68-metre slide at AdO arena also work well for older kids. A hike across Vidden from Fløyen to Ulriken is a real achievement for sporty teenagers. Let them plan one day of the trip themselves.

An autumn break in Bergen gives you mountains in autumn colour, festivals and dark evenings with lights on the harbour. Book your room early, pack the rain gear and let the weather decide the order of the days.
