Did you know that Zander K was the first building in Bergen to receive the prestigious BREEAM environmental certification? This urban hotel by the train station leaves as small a footprint as possible.
Since opening in 2017, Zander K has woven the city’s cultural history together with modern sustainability. Local ingredients and organic choices shape both the menu and the hotel’s overall philosophy. Zander K Hotel has established itself as one of Bergen’s most urban – yet also one of its greenest – hotels, with a lively lobby, bar, and restaurant. Here you can stay in one of our 249 modern rooms and enjoy a delicious hotel breakfast.
The Junior Suite is one of our many modern rooms, where urban design meets sustainable comfort. At Zander K, you make conscious, environmentally friendly choices from the moment you book your stay.

Whether you are visiting the city or live here, Zander K is a natural meeting place in the heart of Bergen. In the hotel’s restaurant, Matbaren, dishes are made using locally sourced ingredients. You will also find an extensive bar menu featuring organic wines and locally brewed craft beer.
Cristina Mezo, Operations Manager at Zander K, explains that De Bergenske has a clear goal: to protect the environment and the local community for future generations.
“We prioritize sustainability in everything we do so that we leave as small a footprint as possible for future generations. This is important to many of our guests, who are aware of these issues," says Cristina.
The hotel holds several environmental certifications and has received recognition for its sustainability efforts. At De Bergenske, we choose environmentally certified suppliers and encourage others to become Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) certified. The food at Zander K is local and organic – minimising food miles while supporting local businesses in Western Norway.
The lobby at Zander K is a natural meeting place in the heart of Bergen. It’s a vibrant space where the pulse of the city meets sustainable thinking—perfect for both hotel guests and locals.
The hotel is certified BREEAM In-Use Excellent, making it the first building in Western Norway with this certification. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is an international certification scheme for environmental sustainability standards in buildings and construction.
“When we created Zander K, we had to take significant steps to become BREEAM certified. We started from the ground up – reviewing the materials in the foundation and replacing all the windows. The building was already environmentally friendly, but the BREEAM standard required considerable effort,” says Cristina.
She adds that the hotel has also replaced shower heads, installed bicycle parking in the garage, and introduced charging stations for electric cars.
Several buildings in Western Norway have since received certification, but so far no other hotels.
“It took us eight months to reach BREEAM Excellent. The certification has five levels: pass, good, very good, excellent, and outstanding. We are proud of the result – not only because it is the right thing to do, but also because sustainable operations have made us more cost-effective,” Cristina continues.
We think about sustainability down to the smallest detail. All shower heads have been replaced as part of Zander K’s BREEAM Excellent certification, one of the first on the west coast of Norway.
At Matbaren at Zander K, organic options are served for every meal. The breakfast is Debio-certified, guaranteeing that the ingredients are produced organically and sustainably. Everything is local and sourced from nearby – here you truly taste Western Norway.

“We minimise food waste and reuse as much as possible,” says Cristina.
The hotel is also Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) certified, a scheme that documents environmental efforts and social responsibility.
“Bergen has become a greener city, and we see that more and more people prioritise organic and sustainable choices,” Cristina concludes.
