According to Cristina Mezo, Operations Manager at Zander K, De Bergenske has a clear goal: to safeguard the environment and the urban community for future generations.
"We prioritize sustainability in everything we do, so that we leave the smallest possible footprint for future generations," says Cristina.
"The hotel has multiple environmental certifications and has received recognition for its sustainability efforts. We choose environmentally certified suppliers and encourage others to become Eco-Lighthouse certified. The food at Zander K is local and organic – which both minimises transport and supports the local business community in Western Norway."
The lobby at Zander K is a natural meeting place in the heart of Bergen. It’s a vibrant space where the pulse of the city meets sustainable thinking—perfect for both hotel guests and locals.
The hotel is certified as BREEAM In-Use Excellent, as the first building in Western Norway. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is an international certification scheme for environmental sustainability standards in building and construction.
"When we first built Zander K, we had to take action to become BREEAM certified. We started from scratch – reviewing the materials in the foundation and replacing all the windows. The building was already environmentally friendly, but the BREEAM standard required considerable effort," says Cristina.
She goes on to say that the hotel has also replaced its shower heads, introduced bicycle parking in its garage and installed EV charging points.
At Matbaren, we serve organic and locally sourced food, with dishes based on local ingredients. Here you’ll get a true taste of Bergen—from fjord to table.
Although several buildings have since been certified in Western Norway, so far no other hotels have joined the prestigious list.
"It took us eight months to achieve BREEAM Excellent. The certification has five levels: pass, good, very good, excellent and outstanding. We are proud of the result, not only because it is the right thing to do, but because sustainable operations have also made us more cost-effective," Cristina adds.
In Matbaren at Zander K, organic alternatives are served at every meal. The breakfast is Debio certified, which guarantees that the ingredients are produced organically and sustainably. Everything is locally sourced, offering a true taste of Western Norway.

"We minimise food waste and reuse most things," says Cristina.
The hotel is also Eco-Lighthouse certified, a scheme that documents environmental efforts and social responsibility.
"Bergen has become a green city, and we see that more and more people are prioritising environmentally friendly and sustainable choices," Cristina concludes.
